GMRT & IGO Study Tour

Jyotirvidya Parisanstha has arranged a study tour to the “Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope” (GMRT) at Khodad and the “IUCAA Girawali Observatory” (IGO). GMRT is the world’s largest array of radio telescopes operating in metre wavelengths. It has a total of 30 fully steerable 45m diameter antennae arranged in a ‘Y’ shaped configuration spread across an area of 25 km diameter.

Timing:

5:00am to 6:00pm

Assembly & pick-up point for Pune participants –
Tilak Smarak Mandir, Tilak Road at 5:15 am [Map Link]

For Pimpri Chinchwad region participants, pickup point is: Opposite Bhosari Vahtuk Vibhag Office off-Nashik Phata at 6:15 am[Map Link]

Reporting time – 5:15 AM at Tilak Smarak and 6:15 AM at Nashik Phata
Back to Pune by 9 PM

Fees:

Registration charges for the tour are as follows: 

  • FOR JVP MEMBER – 1500/-
  • FOR JVP NON MEMBER – 1600/-
    Please note that the fee will not be refunded once paid.

About the Tour

Jyotirvidya Parisanstha has arranged a study tour to the “Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope” (GMRT) at Khodad and the “IUCAA Girawali Observatory” (IGO). GMRT is the world’s largest array of radio telescopes operating in metre wavelengths. It has a total of 30 fully steerable 45m diameter antennae arranged in a ‘Y’ shaped configuration spread across an area of 25 km diameter.
IGO hosts one of India’s biggest telescopes with a primary mirror of 2m diameter, observing in the visible and near-IR part of the EM spectrum.

  3. The program may get changed due to unforeseen reasons, and JVP will not be held responsible for the same.
  4. Fees for the tour, once paid, will not be refunded.
  5. During the tour, all participants should obey all the instructions & decisions taken by the organisers as well as those mentioned by GMRT and IGO officials.
  6. In case of any accident/ death or loss/ damage of valuable/ luggage or any equipment, JVP will not be responsible & no claims of the participants will be entertained.
  7. I will not abscond without informing the organisers. Please carry necessary medications, a cap and a water bottle for travel. Wearing shoes is recommended.

  5. Are cellphones allowed? In GMRT, Cell phones are to be switched off and left in vehicles, as they create interference in Radio Observations

Detailed information on the construction and working of the observatories will be given. At each site, the tour will be guided by a scientist.
