Study Tour to Hanle Observatory and Dark Sky Reserve

The Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR) in Ladakh is India's first designated dark sky reserve, established in 2022 to preserve the area's exceptionally dark skies for scientific research and astro-tourism.

Timing:

14 Sep 7:00am (Leh) - 21 Sep 7:00am (Leh)

Assembly points:

The Assembly Point is at Leh. The tour will begin and conclude at Leh.
This tour includes travel, accommodation and food expenses from LEH – PANGONG – HANLE – UMLING LA PASS – TSO MORIRI – LEH only.

Members: Rs. 26,200/-
Non-Members: Rs. 27,000/-
Option 1: An advance payment of Rs.7000/- per head to be done when booking(non refundable advance)

Option 2: Full payment can be made when booking.

Inclusions :
1. All nights’ accommodation on a twin or triple sharing basis
2. Breakfast, Lunch and dinner for all days (variable menu according to availability)
3. All transportation by non A/C Tempo Traveller or Bus
4. All Inner Line Permits (ILP) and necessary permissions

Exclusions :
1. Monuments and museums entrance fees.
2. Personal expenses or optional tours / extra meals ordered
3. Tips, Insurance, Laundry, Phone Calls, etc.

 

About the Tour

The Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR) in Ladakh is India’s first designated dark sky reserve, established in 2022 to preserve the area’s exceptionally dark skies for scientific research and astro-tourism.

Attractions include:

1. Hanle: The Dark Sky Reserve will be located at Hanle village in Eastern Ladakh.
2 . National Large Solar Telescope (NLST): Gregorian Multi-Purpose Open Telescope in Merak village in Ladakh.
3 . Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT ): 2m Gamma Ray Telescope at Hanle.
4. Major Atmospheric Cerenkov Experiment Telescope (MACE): the world’s highest and the second-largest Cerenkov Telescope.
5 . High Altitude Gamma-Ray (HAGAR): First High Altitude Gamma-Ray Telescope Array.
6. Stargazing at various dark sky locations during the trip.

Important Health Advisory for travel to Leh/High Altitude Regions [Official Link]

All tourists/visitors arriving in Leh must undergo at least 48 hrs of acclimatisation before initiating their journey to high-altitude areas
• Road travel does not help at all in acclimatisation. It builds up the altitude effect progressively.
• Tablet Diamox-250mg (acetazolamide) must be taken twice a day, after breakfast and dinner, at least two days before starting the journey to Leh and should be continued for two more days after arriving at Leh.
• There should be no active physical exertion on the first two days of arrival in Leh.
• Tourists should have at least 2-3 litres. of water per day and should avoid alcohol, smoking cigarettes and sedatives
• Tourists should have a light meal on the first day of arrival to avoid indigestion.
• In case of symptoms of HAPE/HACE, kindly consult a doctor immediately.

Symptoms include:

• Headache • Nausea • Coughing • Lassitude • Lack of Concentration
• Disturbed sleep • Loss of appetite. • Irregular breathing • Breathlessness

Rules and Regulations for the tour

By submitting the payment form, you agree to and declare the following: I am fully aware of all rules & regulations of JVP & accept the same.
1.    I hereby accept that I am participating in the Jyotirvidya Parisanstha (JVP) program on my own responsibility.
2. The program may get changed due to unforeseen reasons, and JVP will not be held responsible for the same.
3. Fees for the tour(advance), once paid, will not be refunded.
4. During the tour, all participants should obey all the instructions & decisions taken by the organisers as well as those mentioned by HANLE officials.
5.    In case of any accident/ death or loss/ damage of valuables/ luggage or any equipment, JVP will not be responsible & no claims of the participants will be entertained.
6. I will not abscond without informing the organisers.
7. I agree to the mandatory health check in Leh on arrival

Please carry necessary medications, a cap and a water bottle for travel. Wearing shoes is recommended.

  5. Are cellphones allowed? Yes, but it may not have cell coverage. (BSNL postpaid works in some regions)
  6. What is included in the fee? Breakfast, Lunch, Transport, and Accommodation from Leh-Leh only.

    ▪ Cold Cream, Sun Screen Lotion (SPF 35 or higher), Lip Balm
    ▪ Woollen Cap, Woollen Gloves, Woollen Socks, along with extra pairs, Woollen Scarf

Detailed information on the working of the observatories will be given. At each site, the tour will be guided by a scientist.
