75 21/06/2012 Dr. Sanjit Mitra, Scientist, IUCAA Cosmic Microwave Background Tilak Smarak Mandir, Pune. basement hall Attendence - 40. Abstract of the lecture: The universe had a very hot and dense past. It expanded and the energy density reduced. At present the relic thermal radiation -- the cosmic microwave background (CMB) -- has cooled down to a temperature of 2.73K. Even though this radiation is highly isotropic, the tiny fluctuations in CMB temperature and polarization sky embed the history of the early universe. Over the last two decades, measurement of CMB anisotropies spearheaded the remarkable transition of cosmology into a precision science. Extracting maximum amount of information out of the CMB anisotropies is perhaps the most important task in current observational cosmology, where the lead role is being played by the Planck mission.
76 12/07/2012 Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharyya, Scientist, IUCAA Discovery of millisecond pulsars with the GMRT Tilak Smarak Mandir, Pune. basement hall Attendence - 75. Dr. Bhattacharya's team had discovered six new exotic millisecond pulsars in last two years with Giant Meterwave Telescope (GMRT) located at Khodad, District Pune. These unique discoveries made with the GMRT are expected to have huge impact on our understanding of pulsar astrophysics and are important scientific contributions from India. Dr. Bhattacharyya threw a light on discoveries of these pulsars in her lecture.
